Reviews

I've read quite a few books recently and seen a couple movies that I'd like to tell you all about. First, Inkheart and Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. This is a series for older kids (not quite teens but not younger than 8). Inkheart was okay. It was a little slow, but there was something intriguing about the story. It's about a family that can read characters out of books and the resulting consequences and adventures of that gift. Inkspell continues the story, except they now venture into the book that has caused all the previous problems. This second book is so much more exciting and moves a lot more. It made me excited for the third book, which should be coming soon.

Next, I read Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer, the final book in the Twilight series. This series is my guilty pleasure—the books aren't the best written, they're cheesy at times, but they just catch you and are my brain candy. This final installment wasn't my favorite in the series, but it wasn't bad. I liked the choices the author made in how to end the whole thing. I don't want to give anything away because I know some who read this blog haven't read the book yet, so maybe I'll wait to really talk about this book until I know all of you who want to read it have read it. Let's just say that I've heard a lot of complaining (on the Internet) about this book, and I disagree with all their objections. I thought it ended how a true romance should end—everyone happy.

The couple movies I wanted to share about are The Kite Runner and The Dark Knight. The Kite Runner was very well done. I had read the book and loved it (not for the faint of heart, but definitely a great read) and the movie really delivered. They followed the book very closely and the same themes and feelings came out. That's not normal for a book-to-movie jump. Needless to say, I was happy with it. The Dark Knight (Batman) has been out awhile but Hubby and I were just able to see it yesterday. A little violent at times (more than I can handle) and quite dark, I still enjoyed it. There were some great action sequences and Heath Ledger really was the Joker incarnate. He was absolutely amazing in this role. Joker was sick and sadistic, but I don't think anyone else could have made me laugh at the blowing up of a hospital. It had a lot to say about darkness and light, good and evil, and I think I'm still processing some of it. It was definately worth seeing and I enjoyed watching it (although, this is another something not for the faint of heart).

Thanks for not giving the ending to Breaking Dawn - I still need to get my hands on a copy! I completely share your "guilty pleasure" sentiment.
